05 / TRANSLATION
BETWEENthe words.
I’ve always found language to be a rather fascinating thing. The same sentence, put into another language, or even with just one word changed, can suddenly feel like something entirely different. When reading translated literature, I often find myself getting caught up in the smallest details of: Why this particular word? Is that really what the original meant? If it was put differently, what would be lost along the way?
Most of these questions don’t have definitive answers, and I’m not particularly interested in finding one, either. Rather than deciding which translation is better, I’m more curious about what happens to language in the process of translation. Some things survive, some get left behind, and others somehow emerge out of nowhere. I wanted to keep a record of these little discoveries, if only to give my rather untimely reading detours somewhere to belong.
